Thoughts on Connected Agricultural Value Streams

Agriculture is changing. Digital platforms, AI, blockchain, tokenisation and new approaches to environmental value are creating possibilities that deserve exploration.

We wanted to step back from individual technologies and consider a broader question:

What might become possible if we first understand the agricultural value stream, identify where value is lost, and then explore how people, process, data and technology could address those gaps?

Agri-Logistics and Market Access: Connecting Producers to Consumers is a thought paper, not a guide or a proven implementation model.

It brings together our current thinking about agricultural value streams and explores possibilities around market access, trusted data, AI, blockchain, tokenisation, financing and carbon value.

Some of these concepts are established in other contexts; others require further research, testing and validation before their practical application or commercial viability can be determined.

The intention is not to prescribe. It is to provide a way of thinking about the agricultural ecosystem, raise questions and encourage discussion about what could be possible.

About This Thought Paper

This publication presents Pétanque NXT's thinking on how agricultural value streams could evolve through better processes, trusted data and emerging technologies. It is intended to stimulate discussion, research and practical experimentation.

The concepts, frameworks and scenarios presented are exploratory. They have not all been independently validated or tested in practice and should not be interpreted as implementation guidance, investment advice, technical advice or representations of achievable commercial outcomes.

We invite practitioners, researchers, farmers, technology providers, financial institutions and other participants in the agricultural ecosystem to challenge, test and build on these ideas.

Why We Developed This Thought Paper

Our starting point is simple:

Understand the value stream before choosing the technology.

The paper visualises the journey from agricultural inputs through production, aggregation, logistics, processing and marketplaces to the consumer.

It considers where friction, information gaps, trust issues and lost value may occur and asks what role emerging technologies might play in addressing them.

From there, we deliberately extend the thinking further.

  • Could trusted agricultural data improve access to markets and finance?

  • Could real-world agricultural assets or future value be tokenised?

  • Could independently measured and verified environmental improvements create an additional source of value?

  • Could these mechanisms ultimately help connect smaller producers to markets, capital and consumers differently?

We do not present these questions as answered. We present them as possibilities to investigate.

What The Paper Explores

The paper considers:

  • From producer to consumer, and where information, logistics and trust may break down.

  • Possible applications of AI, automation, digital platforms and blockchain across the agricultural ecosystem.

  • The importance of trusted identity, data verification and reliable information.

  • Potential applications of tokenisation to agricultural assets and future value.

  • Whether verified environmental improvements could create additional economic value.

The paper deliberately connects these ideas to show what a more connected agricultural ecosystem could look like, not to suggest that every element has already been proven or should necessarily be implemented.

Who Might Find This Thinking Useful?

This thought paper is intended to contribute to discussion across the agricultural ecosystem, including:

  • Farmers and agricultural producers

  • Agribusiness leaders

  • Supply chain and logistics professionals

  • Processors and distributors

  • Financial institutions and investors

  • Insurers

  • Technology and digital transformation professionals

  • Marketplaces and ecosystem builders

  • Government and development organisations

  • Researchers and practitioners exploring the future of agriculture
